YOU ARE SEATED AT HOME, LONELY!!

“About a month ago, I liked your pictures, about a month ago, I sent you a DM, about a month ago, I shot my shot any you ignored, now valentine is coming, where is your boyfriend? You are seated at home, lonely, your mates are getting flowers and you’re seated at home, lonely” (Mr. Cocoyam, Where is your boyfriend 2017)

An internet sensation that is so popular on Valentine’s Day, well most of the male contacts had it on their status last year, a mode of taunting and dealing with rejection, possibly. February is dubbed the “month of love”, by whom, the Lorde only knows.

We are day one into the month and most people are already thinking about the 14th. Social media has been awash with florist offers, ideal baecation destinations and gift ideas. The commercialization is startling. Crushes are sub-tweeting their likely crushes, most on mute or are not followed back, a story for another day. Meanwhile, some are just really not thinking about it.

I was having a conversation with someone and they mentioned that the pressure to celebrate Valentine’s is mounting. When asked whether I had plans, I mumbled that I would most probably go out with friends for a jazz show. Ahumuza had mentioned dinner but we haven’t concretized that plan. I will drag her to the jazz event. (😈😈😈😈)During the conversation, I remarked that the day is a big farce. Was it inspired by the fact that I will not be all lovey-dovey? Perhaps.

Last year on Valentines, my then as if person, ignored me the whole day only to send me a voice note of Nameless’s Nasinzia later in the evening as I went to the cinema to watch Alita. I spent the greater half of the night at home eating chicken with everyone at home. It was a good day.

Despite the fact that Valentine’s Day is most commonly associated with romance and affection, the day should transcend romantic affection and love. I mean, there are 8 different types of love. Go for that spa treat if you can afford it, put that phone away and catch up with your friends and family. Tamara Levitt calls it being present and mindful or just stay home with your phone commenting with the “God when foundation” picture on other people’s posts. In the end, it is up to you really. Most important thing is to love yourself, not just for this month but until you breathe your last.

For those in high gears about the day romantically, kudos, just don’t forget to keep the same energy throughout the year. Happy New Month!
